Ep 23: Nourishing the Land, Nourishing Us
The Farm That Feeds Soil & Soul – a conversation with Ed Hanbidge
In this heartfelt and insightful episode of Scribing Journeys, I have chat with Ed Hanbidge, the down-to-earth farmer behind Keadeen Mountain Farms, nestled in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. Ed shares his inspiring journey from electronic engineering graduate to regenerative farmer, offering us a glimpse into a lifestyle rooted in nature, sustainability, and tradition.
From Circuit Boards to Soil
Ed’s journey back to the land wasn’t straightforward. After graduating with a degree in electronic engineering in 2008 during the recession, job prospects were slim. A farm fire in 2013 became a turning point:
“I said, right, okay, that’s a sign. I came back and started farming.”
He began with a small flock of sheep gifted by his father and a handful of Dexter cattle, which have now grown into a thriving organic herd.
Embracing Organic & Regenerative Farming
Ed entered organic farming through an incentive scheme in 2015, but what began as a practical choice quickly became a passionate mission.
“It was definitely a journey, and still is. I’m trying to teach myself what they knew back in the 1800s.”
He now farms entirely without chemical fertilisers, instead nurturing the land through natural methods, rotational grazing, and attention to soil biodiversity.
“Every Day’s a School Day”
With warmth and humility, Ed shares that farming, especially organically and regeneratively, is a continual learning experience:
“I just turned 40, and I’ve realised I’m only halfway through my farming career.”
He explores techniques like compost tea, JADAM soil inoculants, and multi-species grazing, finding ways to nourish the land that, in turn, nourishes us.
The Power of Hemp
A true advocate for hemp, Ed grows the versatile plant not just for oil and food but also as a regenerative crop:
“Hemp has a taproot that goes deep into the soil, pulling nutrients up. It even puts organic matter back as it grows.”
From hemp oil to balms, Ed’s simple, three-ingredient skincare products are loved by customers—and his knowledge of hemp’s building, textile, and environmental potential is vast.
A Taste of the Wicklow Hills
Keadeen Mountain Farms is perhaps best known for its incredible Dexter beef and Wicklow lamb. Ed raises his cattle and sheep on wild, nutrient-rich pasture, producing deeply flavourful, nutrient-dense meat:
“The Dexters are small but mighty… their marbling is amazing. It’s what gives them that unique flavour.”
Ed’s commitment to quality means he delivers most of his meat orders himself, maintaining close connections with his customers.
Hempcrete, Sustainability & Looking Ahead
Ed is also a passionate advocate for hemp as a building material, lamenting the lack of processing infrastructure in Ireland:
“The government needs to back hemp to the tune of €100 million. Not run it—just back it. Because it can meet climate targets and create jobs.”
He envisions a more self-sufficient Ireland where we use hemp and sheep wool for insulation, reduce imports, and honour traditional ways while embracing innovation.
Final Thoughts
This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in farming, food, and the future of sustainable living. Ed’s honesty, knowledge, and gentle humour make this conversation both educational and heart-warming.
