My love for the Art of Handwriting started from a young age. I’d watch my Dad sit at our dining table and inscribe invitations. I was completely captivated and enthralled by the way he would dip his beautiful golden nib into the dark Indian Ink. Then move his hand across the paper to produce the most wonderful flourished letter with a simple stroke of the pen.
From that day to this, the love for Calligraphy has not left me. My work has developed over the years and I have been fortunate to have received encouragement and mentoring from artists, typographers and graphic designers.

I started to work commercially in the mid-1990′s and been very fortunate to have received commissions from Bailey’s Irish Cream, AIB Banks, Microsoft, Eigse Carlow Arts Festival and Carlow County Council to name but a few.
As a Calligrapher I have always been amazed by The Power of the Written Word.
Let me start by giving you an example of what I mean.
I am often asked to create memorial pieces bringing words of loving eulogy to life. Clients come to me filled with immense sadness and words in hand – words that encapsulate their loved one. One thing that I’ve noticed time and time again when working with my clients that the reading and re-reading of the words I believe that this helps to bring some comfort to my clients.
Another experience that comes to mind happened while I was tutoring. Normally as part and parcel of my courses I ask my students to pick a piece of poetry, proverb or quote that resonated with them and there by make it easier for my students to work with. I remember one student in particular who was shy and had little confidence attending my class was a way for her to just get out of the house. She picked a piece of that spoke about time and healing – the words served like an affirmation for her. It was a subtle transformation. And one I believe was brought about due to the repetition of working on her piece that helped bring about her transformation from having no self-confidence to become one of the most positive people in my class. I have been really lucky to see this happen to at least one person each time I have taught Calligraphy – such is The Power of the Word.
It is lessons like these that have taught me that the Power of the written word is not to be underestimated. Using words with care have power to change your thinking. From affirmations to empower or heal.
